  1. In St. John’s, visit us at 75 Tiffany Court and meet with one of our experts. You can also visit any of our 19 Employment Centers throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

What is the legal status of Ukrainians arriving in Newfoundland and Labrador?

Most Ukrainians arriving In Newfoundland and Labrador come through Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) program, which allows them to live and work In Canada for up to three years, during which they can apply for Permanent Residence once eligible. Ukrainians have an open work permit, so they can work for any employer. We can help Ukrainians and employers navigate the immigration process.

We meet with job seekers from all different backgrounds and experience levels to learn more about the jobs that are right for them. We’ll match that with your hiring needs to find the strongest candidates – meaning you’ll spend less time sorting through applications. And we can even host interviews or presentations to candidates at the Employment Centre to help you find the help you need faster.

Yes. At Ukraine Job Connect, we can help you take advantage of wage subsidies, funding available for training, resettlement assistance and immigration supports. The JobsNL Wage Subsidy program helps employers create new jobs. Ukrainians are eligible for a 42-week subsidy. For more details, please contact us. 

I’m a small employer, and I don’t know a lot about immigration. Will you help me navigate the process?

Yes. We offer immigration and settlement support services for you and for job seekers. Our experts are available to help you every step of the way.

We can also offer guidance on the policies and resources that apply to you as an employer, to help you take advantage of supports in place.

How can I best support internationally trained workers in succeeding on the job?

You can provide a comprehensive orientation and onboarding process to help internationally trained workers understand your company culture, values, and expectations. This onboarding can include information about workplace norms, communication styles, and any relevant Industry-specific practices. You can also pair new employees with experienced colleagues that can facilitate their Integration into the team and provide them with guidance and support as they navigate their new work environment. This approach can also help to create strong professional relationships and promote a sense of belonging. Moreover, you can encourage and celebrate the diverse backgrounds of your employees by organizing multicultural events, acknowledging cultural holidays, or sharing stories about different traditions. These activities can help create an inclusive and respectful work environment where everyone feels values and appreciated.

What is important to know about Ukrainian newcomers and professionals?

Ukrainian professionals have may have extensive work experience in their home country. This experience can bring valuable insights and problem-solving abilities to your organization. However, it is important to recognize that their credentials may not be immediately familiar to local organizations. Be prepared to assess their skills and explore opportunities for leveraging such skills within your organization  

 

It is also important to recognize that many Ukrainian newcomers have recently fled a war-torn country seeking a peaceful and stable life In Newfoundland and Labrador. It is crucial to be considerate of the fact that they may have experienced significant trauma, loss, and disturbance in their lives. Providing a supportive and understanding work environment can help them heal and rebuild their lives in our communities.  

You may also consider offering access to mental health resources, flexible work arrangements, or additional support as needed to accommodate their unique circumstances, including offering support to help their entire family integrate into the community. 

How can I (or my company) support a job candidate get ready for work?

You can support a job candidate get ready for work by offering ongoing training and development opportunities that can further enhance their skills and knowledge, ensuring their success, as they get ready for work. This may include workshops or in-house training programs tailored to their unique needs. You can also consider providing language support for those who may require additional assistance In Improving their English language skills. This can include offering occupation-specific language training or access to language learning resources as part of their employment offer.

The Short-term Training for Individuals – Ukrainians program is designed to provide support for individuals to participate in skills training that is less than 12 weeks in duration, with the goal of helping them prepare for, find, or keep employment. This program addresses individualized training, while group training is provided through the Association for New Canadians’ Short-term Training for Groups Program.
